I have a single-location retail store β€” is Odoo right for me or is it overkill?

Odoo has a reputation for being "for big companies" because it's a complete ERP, with dozens of modules. But that's exactly what lets you start simple and grow without switching systems later. For a single location, what you really need is:

  • Point of Sale (POS). It's the core module. It works offline, has a touch screen, cash handling, and integrates with fiscal printers and barcode scanners with no hassle.
  • Basic inventory. Real-time stock control that updates automatically with every POS sale. You don't need to enable complex replenishment rules, multiple routes or anything like that.
  • Accounting/Invoicing. If you're in Uruguay, this includes electronic invoicing (CFE) connected to the DGI, which is mandatory and exactly where we do a lot of our work.
  • What you do NOT need to install (and this is what matters for keeping things simple): manufacturing modules, multiple warehouses, project management, advanced HR, or anything Odoo suggests "to get more out of the system". Every extra module is one more screen for your employee, one more process to understand, and more money in implementation.

The real advantage of starting with Odoo instead of a generic point-of-sale system: the day you open a second location, want to sell online, or need an accountant with direct access to the numbers, you don't switch systems. You just enable the module you're missing and keep going.

Do you have a store and wonder whether this is too big for you?
